After the successful reimagining of ‘Last Patrol’ on their last release ‘Milking the stars’ Monster Magnet find themselves looking further back this time for the next ‘re-imagining’ – five years in fact to 2010’s Mastermind album.

If you aren’t familiar with the concept Dave Wyndorf and crew pick up a release and taking elements of the original songs create new ones, sometimes there are large elements remaining of the originals, other times just hints and echoes remain. Sonically though the vibe is very different from the original work, and to protect the innocent sometimes even the names are changed…

If you aren’t convinced it will work then we can tell you it really does. ‘Cobras and Fire’ is a great psychedelic space rock trip to ‘what might have been land’ and also of course a new album in its own right.

With eight re-imaginings, a cover version of The Temptation’s Ball of Confusion (here given a rather cool Hawkwind-like treatment) and a new song – a kind of Frankenstein made up of parts of various Monster Magnet songs and given the portentous title ‘I Live Behind the Paradise Machine: Evil Joe Barresi's Magnet Mash Vol.1’ to close proceedings.

If you love the dirty sound of ‘Milking the Stars’ then that is very much the sound here, and along with the use of sitars, pianos and organ there’s a real feel of freedom and creativity at play throughout.
