Hobbsy – Risen From the Dead

Self-Released - 2015

The debut album “Risen From The Dead” from Victorian band Hobbsy has caught The Rockpit’s attention as we take a look at the tracks on offer.

Big meaty grooves and ripping sleazy undercurrents raise Hobbsy above the also rans on this his debut album after a break from music. And he starts off well with the great and gloriously catchy sleazy Metal of ‘The Few and the Many’. It’s a great start from the Geelong native.

The album isn’t without its missteps though thankfully the only one here comes quite fast. ‘The Awakening’ just doesn’t connect at all, you can see where it’s heading and appreciate the idea but it somehow falls in the execution. Other listeners here at ‘The Pit’ disagree saying it kicks Metal ass with a huge groove, even if it feels a little sparse and I guess that in a nutshell is the beauty of music.

‘I Am’ takes the mood down to mellow Alice in Chains territory and ‘Your Silence’ picks up a swagger that guides the song onwards nicely and lays it on sweet melodies, it might well be our pick of the bunch here. ‘Mannya Jam’ that follows it adds another twist, some might say it’s unfinished and clocking in at only 1.40 it does seem like an interlude before ‘Lay’ hits and buries you under a fallen thrashy wall that gives way to almost Wildhearts-like melodies.

The album closes with ‘Ascension of the Lesser Path’ the densest song here that opens with a scream and wades its sludgy way through dirty vocals and almost gothic guitars. It’s almost saying ‘I have more’ and we’ll have to wait and see if Hobbsy does.

We like.
