Perth metallers Sanzu have been getting some positive attention as of late and their debut full length album “Heavy Over The Home” which was released last year, has certainly been no exception. Following up from their EP release “Painless”, the band looks like they have hit a scorcher with their debut.
From the beginning and what I have read in other reviews, this album could be brushed off as a Gojira clone in both style and sound but that is where the similarities stop. This has a life and pulse all of it’s own. What strikes the listener is the proficiency at which the band are working both vocally and in every other aspect, in truth most bands are around are 4 or 5 albums into their career before hitting these lofty and savage heights.
With the opener “Old Orchard Floor”, you know that you are in for one hell of a ride. This album is unashamedly heavy with no real slowing of pace and if I’m not mistaken, Perth has not experienced such a sledge hammer of an album in quite some time and so you must also remind yourself that these guys have only been on the scene for a couple of years.
If it is at all possible, vocalist Zac Andrews has taken his craft to the next level with the track “Phenomena” being a perfect example of this. “The Chill” has a slower menacing vibe about it in both guitar tone and feel, very reminiscent of fellow Goliath’s Meshuggah. Now please forgive me for name dropping, however I can’t come up with enough great things to say about this album other than to say if you’re looking for world class heaviness then this is the album for you. I and also many others will be left wondering how this could possibly be topped, truly astounding!
