Buffalo Summer are set to be Wales’ next big rock band, and they arrive seemingly just at the right time. For me this is an album almost equal to the debuts of Thunder and The Black Crowes and there’s more than a hint of both bands early days in the mix, especially London’s finest. And that of course is a good thing, a very good thing.
If you’re going to open, then opening with your biggest, brashest statement is always the way to go and Buffalo Summer does it so well with ‘Money’ which rides a huge riff and swaggers about the room like the king of the hill.
One of two songs that immediately reminds me of that great British Rock band Thunder follows: ‘Heartbreakin’ Floorshakin’’ is glorious, and it shows an inherent understanding of what makes great British Rock great that is beyond the years of the band. Not since Thunder’s Backstreet Symphony album have I heard a British band that nailed it this well.
The rest of the album is up there too quality-wise with some great noise from top to tail. If I had to pick favourites the languid Black Crowes-like blues rock of ‘Levitate’; the laid back cool and immediacy of ‘Neverend’; the rock-funk of ‘Little Charles’ and closing pair of ‘Bird On a Wire’ and ‘Water to Wine’ would all make it.
If you love your British Rock, love hard rock with a Blues edge but love a little variety in the mix then this could be the best thing to invade your ears in years.
