Spanish thrashers Crisix have released yet another blistering thrash metal album with “From Blue To Black” that continues on the path of destruction that their first two albums started. While there will be nothing spectacularly new here for both Crisix fans and thrash metal followers alike, it’s the band’s powerful approach to a glistening production and a barrel of riffs performed in the tightest way possible that makes this band stand out amongst the modern thrash elite.
This album doesn’t need to be listened in a particular way or order, every track here is thrash metal through and through and Crisix don’t apologise for it. The album starts out in typical Crisix fashion with a breaking riff that launches into an all out thrash attack and it’s pretty relentless from here on. “G.G.M” (The Great Metal Motherfucker) hilariously tears through on mid-tempo range before speeding up towards the end, “Psycho Crisix World” has a simple beat kicking the song off while “Journey Through Fire” nods it’s head to the old school heavy metal of yesteryear.
Of note is the Terminator movie themed “T-Terror Era”, inspired by the Terminator movies in both lyrics and melody. The famous Terminator intro theme can be found here through guitars as the band thrash their way through the song. As a Terminator fan, I loved this but many who don’t love the film franchise may question what the hell is going on here!
A highlight on the album is the title track “From Blue To Black”, one of the best thrash intros I have heard yet, epic and brutal, heavy and memorable. The double bass and galloping riff that whips through after an epic beginning really captures what Crisix do best. The track slows down a bit about 2 thirds of the way through with this jammy type mellow part but it’s one of the better tracks the band have come up with yet. “Strange” has a Megadeth vibe to the song, harking back to the Rust In Peace/Peace Sells era which shows that the band are not afraid to wear their influence on their sleeves. It’s difficult to really do anything completely new in thrash metal but Crisix do their thing brilliantly, their third album in and they have yet to disappoint.
