When Dillinger Escape Plan announced they were ending the band after almost 20 years of insane chaos, it was not only a shock to the system of many hardcore fans but in a way, almost an end of an era in a genre that was virtually spawned by the very existence of the 5 piece outfit from New Jersey. Their final album “Dissociation” will be the closing chapter to Dillinger Escape Plan’s eventful chapter so we take a look at the songs and what we will be left with once the band goes their separate ways.
Now let’s be honest here, what can be written about the Dillinger Escape Plan that hasn’t been written before? Well first things first from all the press circulating this will be the bands final album and by hell below what a way to send such an influential and thought provoking group out with the blistering album “Dissociation”.
Opening with the fearsome track “Limerent Death” musically if you can imagine running head first into a brick wall at high speed then you will grasp the tone here. Full of classic spite and and vitriol that we’ve all come to know admire and respect, I’m reminded of the phenomenal album “Calculating Infinity” with spasmodic guitar riffs and fit inducing vocals. The track “Wanting Not So Much” has a psychotic, almost punk feel about it which also has some slower jazz elements. The track “Fugue” is a complete 180 electronic techno based track with drum fills interspersed with strange guitar chords and no vocals at all, completely unexpected! “Low Feels Blvd” throws you right back into craziness with a screeching jazz based tune, “Surrogate” continues the slow grinding hell wih the line “I’m afraid how this will end”…… by this point so am I!
Now I may raise the ire of some people here but some of the tracks sound very similar here and tend to bleed into one another. That being said, Dillinger were and will never be a band to reinvent the wheel, they are masters of their respective craft and let’s face it, in a world full of ever changing fads and tastes there will never be another Dillinger Escape Plan. If this was the opus to send them off then what an explosive way to do so sure to become a firm favourite for the fans for many years to come!
