I don’t get ‘Ghost’ – not the image or the sound, but the appeal. Light Melodic pop-laced and sweetly sung it may be, but there are hundreds of other bands out there that do this stuff better. Still I keep giving them a fair hearing and to be honest the melodic pop-rock of ‘Square Hammer’ has a feel of a modern day BOC mashed with someone like Pink. Nice guitars, catchy chorus, so far so good.
The issue is on this EP that it is the only new song here, with the bulk made up of four cover songs. ‘Nocturnal Me’ that follows is a little rockier, and a lot Proggier but as a cover of one f the 80’s most over-rated bands Echo and the Bunnymen, I’ve heard it and still don’t like it.
It gets worse though and based on the silky croonfest of ‘I Believe’ I have no interest in hearing the original wherever it may have come from. It’s just boring and I fail to see why it would interest any lovers of Rock music. No hold that thought it’s actually just a bad song and one which I have no idea why anyone would have covered it and it’s four minutes you’ll not get back.
Closing out the EP ‘Missionary Man’, originally by the Eurhythmics, sounds awful and rather obvious: nothing is added to the original and plenty taken away. The EP closes with ‘Bible’ by little-known Swedish band ‘Imperiet’, it’s pure 80’s pop and not hard to understand why you’ve never heard of it. It’s dull, insipid and sounds likes something bands like Icehouse or U2 would have rejected after a very short listen.
I don’t get Ghost, maybe I’m supposed to like them because of their dress sense? Musically I could nae a million pop bands I’d rather listen to.
