The much anticipated album by Dillinger Escape Plan front man Greg Puciato is on it’s way very shortly and at first listen this is as far removed from a Dillinger sounding record as you can imagine. Taking inspiration from the much maligned band “Depeche Mode” similar in the vein of Chino Moreno’s project Team Sleep in concept, tracks like “Maybe We Should” and “Ice Of Never” are a complete 180 degree turn from what we as fans or just the casual listener have come to expect.
Vocally is where the real surprises are, very clean and clear with an almost eerie industrial feel to them. If I’m very honest there is not much variation on the overall sound of the album, I really feel that the album needs time to grow on the listener. May I even suggest listening to this on a good set of head phones to be able to immerse yourself completely and get the full picture. From what I have read about this project, the band had originally envisioned this album to be a much more guitar based project however it took a completely different road. The origins of this band stretch back as far as 2011 and also feature members of the respective bands Puscifer and Nine Inch Nails. The 10 tracks can be broken down into two sections, light and dark, with every track coming with a new twist and turn similar to a Rollercoaster. The exciting feature of the album is that it feels like an uncharted adventure into the unknown, the track “Taman Shud” has a very 80’s sounding Peter Gabriel sound to it which makes a nice change. Album closer “Apocalypse Morning” has a dream like quality about it, ironic given that the title of the album is “Daydream Fever”.
Overall a solid effort but in truth the album leaves you a tad disappointed given the amount of hype behind it. Every track bleeds into the next leaving you feeling confused, however that being said, if you are looking for something a little left of field then by all means give it a spin. Let’s see and hopefully hear what the band has to bring on the live front as this may sound like an entirely different beast again. I give it a 7 out of 10.
