Known outside Australia largely for the single ‘Better’ The Screaming Jets were always one of those bands you felt could take on the world and yet never really did. After a gap of 8 years The Jets are back and while new album ‘Chrome’ turns out to be a great return, it didn’t connect right away.
‘Automatic Cowboy’ as an opener just didn’t really connect, not knowing whether it was a mid-tempo groover or a rocker, it kind of fell between two stools at the bar and it got us a little worried; though thankfully it does grow on you and the rest of the album is far more immediate.
In fact the deeper you dig the better this one gets with seemingly something for us all from ‘Cash in Your Ticket’ and its Bluesy thrust; through the excellent ‘Razor’ and its swagger to tracks that really rock out like the Jets of old (‘Scar’ and ‘Smack in the Mouth’).
But there’s also the quirky shuffle and almost New Wave Punk of ‘Turn it Around’ to the deep groove of ‘Sex and Violence’ and the more contemplative Tom Petty-tinged ‘It’s Time’ that closes.
This just gets better with every listen.
