Without Mercy’s forthcoming EP ‘Mouichido’ is a rebirth for the band as it’s a re-release of re-recorded material from their 2014 EP ‘Reborn’. ‘Mouichido’, the Japanese word for “Repeat” or “to do one more time” is perfectly titled for the EP to signify its re-release of previously recorded versions that now feature new vocalist Alex Friis and a guest appearance by vocalist Mark Hunter of Chimaira on track ‘In Waves’.
Vancouver, Canada’s road dog’s Without Mercy return with a four track entitled “Mouichido” which from Japanese translated means “repeat”. Because these are reworked re-recorded tracks from the band’s 2014 album “Reborn”, from the out set you can hear and even feel the band’s intent and that is to bludgeon the listener and the band without coming off as corny.
To live up to their name, they have even brought in the services of Chimaira front man Mark Hunter to lend his trade mark barks and snarls. There are blaring and obvious flaws here which is a little disappointing and to an untrained ear this is a crushing mosh pit inducing riff fest. Great but for the long term metal fans, these songs seem very rehashed, ironic given the english translation of this albums name.
I’d go as far as to say Pantera and Machine Head were doing this kind of material back in the early 90’s – “Far Beyond Driven”, “The More Things Change” etc. This is a real shame as this release had and has some real potential, the riffs are booming and frantic but as I mentioned earlier this formula of heavy breakdown heavy riff is done and dusted. I’d skip over this one, maybe next will be a different story…you be the judge.
