ALBUM REVIEW: Blues Pills – Lady in Gold Live in Paris

Nuclear Blast - November 3rd 2017

If you’re looking for a band on the rise with some real talent who seemingly have made all the right moves and haven’t put a foot wrong musically it’s Blues Pills you’re after. Since their 2015 debut they’ve carved out quite an impressive live reputation (we loved them in Australia) and after the release of sophomore effort ‘Lady in Gold’  last year their star is hooting even higher.

The only odd thing is that the band has now released as many live albums as they have albums, or one more if you count the Bonus DVD – Live At Hammer Of Doom Festival 2013 that came with the expanded re-release of the debut album.

The first live release ‘Blues Pills Live’ in 2015 was a great document – 10 tracks showcasing a young band at their very best and now along comes ‘Lady in Gold – Live in Paris’ – 15 tracks that add 9 new selections to the set with only four cuts from that first live album missing out (‘Dig In’, ‘Time Is Now’, ‘No Hope Left For Me’ and ‘Astralplane’).

On October 30th, 2016 Blues Pills played a sold out show in front of 1200 euphoric fans at Le Trianon in Paris, France, showcasing their second album but live managing to inject even  more power, rawness and real rock ‘n’ roll edge. This is that show in its entirety – caught on both tape and on four cameras.

There seems little need to point out that this show is something rather special. As a band Blues Pills have come along way in a relatively short space of time and whilst we all know that they are phenomenal musicians in their own right this is also proof that there’s not just a wonderful energy but also a real chemistry at play on stage.
