Formed back in 2008 Supergroup Chickenfoot who seem to have been in a holding pattern since the release of the first live album back in 2012 – ‘Chickenfoot LV’ have again spluttered into action with a new ‘Best of’ collection and Live release titled ‘Best + Live’, with the live set taken from a couple of dates they played at Harrah’s in Lake Tahoe last year. For fans craving new material there’s also one solitary new song – Divine Termination’.
Of course when you happen to have members who do rather nicely from their other works that sort of inactivity is understandable. But a Best of release after two albums and a bonus live album that completely ignores the second album ‘III’ is a little odd.
The ‘Best of’ portion is essentially just that – half from ‘Chickenfoot’ and half from ‘III’ with the addition of the new groovy little mid-tempo number ‘Divine Termination’ which in truth is nice, but certainly not worth rushing out to buy the album for.
The live album is essentially just a run through the first album with the bonus of ‘Bitten By the Wolf’ (a song on the 2012 re-release) and the omission of ‘Runnin’ Out’. It’s odd that its just the 11 tracks long when both Harrah shows ran to 14 not including encores. It is sheer value though – running to over 90 minutes. It’s still one of my main bugbears these days though that bands trim their sets when releasing ‘live product’, jeez just release it even if only online so that we can take away the whole night if we want it!
The really odd thing though about my review link is that it omits what may be the compelling reason to buy this release aside from the new track. The ‘Best of’ CD is set to contain live versions of Sammy Hagar’s old Montrose classic ”Bad Motor Scooter’, The Who’s ‘My Generation’ and Joe Satriani’s interpretation of ‘The Star Spangled Banner’. They may well sound great but I didn’t get to hear them, though they have been previously available on the DVD ‘Get Your Buzz On’ recorded in Phoenix in 2009.
Let’s hope these rumblings are the start of something new for Chickenfoot because they sound one fire at those Lake Tahoe shows!
