Combining a worldly sound from the ranks of Ireland and France, Molybaron have a rock sound that is mildly familiar but standing in it’s own identity as a band who simply take their influences and create something that is both listenable and entertaining. With references to acts like Queens Of The Stone Age and Muse with a touch of southern rock and blues as well as the odd metal moment, their self titled debut album is definitely one to rock out to.
The modern alt rock styles is fairly prominent in a lot of the tracks, “Moly”, “On The Other Side” and the more mellower “Sleep Leaves This Place” is sleek in design and cranking enough to boost the guitar junkies out there. But tracks like the opening “Fear Is Better Business Than Love” has a cool southern rock vibe hidden amongst the modernism of it all and the guitar solo alone stands out as it’s own entity. There’s also some classic rock stuff thrown in like in “Let’s Die Together” which has a big swagger to it’s rhythm while “Only When Darkness Falls” is melodic rock with a ton of catchy hooks.
One of the stand out songs on offer here is the brilliant “Incognito”, a bass line bringing the song in weaves a dynamic mellow verse with exploding anthemic choruses before heading into meal territory with a mean riff two thirds in that switches into high energy gear before crashing into a climactic end. It’s moments like this that leave a sweet sensation to your ears as you start dissecting the different things going on in their music.
Molybaron have a definite modern sound to their music while retaining older influences that inject the all important hook and melody needed in good rock albums. The familiarity of the songs eventually dissipate into an appreciation for the catchiness of it all, after all, good rock songs are good rock songs and Molybaron have certainly did that on their first album.
