Chuck Berry Dead at 90 – Rockers React
Chuck Berry, the singer, songwriter and guitar great who practically defined rock music with his hits “Maybellene,” “Roll Over Beethoven,” “Memphis,” “My Ding-a-Ling” and “Sweet Little Sixteen,” died Saturday, March 18. He was 90. The cause of death was not revealed. Check out Billboard.com for an in-depth look at Berry’s career and influence on rock music.
Several rockers performed tributes to Berry this weekend, including Bon Jovi, Gene Simmons and Ted Nugent.
“The first time I ever sang in a talent competition, in the mid-’70s sometime, it was this song,” Jon Bon Jovi told the crowd during his Chuck Berry tribute of “Johnny B. Goode” at his concert in Columbus, Ohio.
During Gene Simmons’ solo March 18 show in Cleveland, he and his band also performed “Johnny B. Goode” as a tribute to Berry.
Ted Nugent played a blistering solo electric Facebook live take of “Johnny B. Goode,” followed by four simple words: “Chuck Berry, thank you.”
Mikkey Dee Visits Lemmy’s Memorial Statue at the Rainbow Bar and Grill
Ex-Motorhead drummer Mikkey Dee visits Lemmy statue for the first time at the Rainbow in Los Angeles.
The life-size sculpture by artist Travis Moore was unveiled in August last year and was commissioned after fans and friends contributed to a fundraising campaign following Lemmy’s death in December 2015.
Dee says in the video shot by Headbangr: “They did a good job. He’d be absolutely fucking pissed off right now. You know why? It’s too bright! He’d say, ’Turn the light off!’ Way too bright. It’s a piece of art. You know, Lemmy’s wherever – watching. He’d be so proud because this was his second home. Actually, it was his first home! His apartment was his second home!”
