Eightball Junkies is a four-piece rock band from Sydney, Australia that originally formed back in 2005. After a break-up only a few years later following the release of their debut EP, the band returned the following decade with a new lineup and a second EP ‘In Hell’ which was followed a year later with this recent release – ‘Vaudeville Show’. A gritty and raw hard rock sound with a touch of classic rock and just a subtle hint of old punk rock attitude makes this band one for the true rock fans and it’s captured in just three songs quite well.
‘Vaudeville Show’ may be a short release but it’s enough to guage what the band are about. It’s real gritty and raw stuff, a throw back to some classic stuff with a gutteral produced recording that captures what real rock can be. It’s not surprising to hear that they have shared the stage with such acts as Rose Tattoo, Nick Oliveri and The Radiators, stylistically Eightball Junkies fit just right in but there’s a little punk thing going on which is reminiscent of very early Guns N’ Roses before Appetite For Destruction broke out. The attitude and swagger of the band as they run through groove beats and gritty riffs definitely has that tone about it especially in the title track that opens the EP. It’s catchy too with it’s hooks as do the other two tracks on offer, “Once More From The Top” which has a little Clash and the Who mixed in with that rock sound they aim for, and “Psycho Holiday” (no not the Pantera track!) which is a high energy rock n’ roll number that grooves all the way through.
It may be a little rough around the edges sonically but rock n’ roll never needs to be polished to accomplish it’s motive, which is to grab your ears attention and simply remember what you heard. With a little more work Eightball Junkies could certainly have something here as evidence on ‘Vaudeville Show‘.
