ARIA-nominated, Melbourne rockers KINGSWOOD today expose a new side of their music with the release of the soulful new single ‘Golden’ along with an official video for the track. The second single to be revealed from their forthcoming second album, After Hours, Close To Dawn, (which is set for release via Dew Process on March 3), the song sees the band trade in their trademark big riffs and throaty vocals, and in their lay down a grooving bassline, beautiful falsetto harmonies, and a tinge of Wurlitzer that all combine into a sound that will lead you to see KINGSWOOD in a whole new light.
‘Golden’, which premiered via the airwaves on triple j’s Goodnights, is a seductive, slow jam, which again highlights the unexpected and subtler nuances about what lies beneath KINGSWOOD’s rock n’ roll swagger. The band’s guitarist and songwriter, Alex Laska, says the song is inspired by the intense sensations triggered by the spark of human connection. “Golden is a reflection on the weird split between euphoria / isolation that I’ve often felt after having really connected with someone, particularly romantically, in those early stages, you’re vibing high off the experience but only you and perhaps the other person can share it, sometimes only you…”
The video directed by Matt Campbell of ‘Some Motherfucker’s Gotta Pay’ notoriety was shot over two days at Parramatta’s Historic War Memorial Swimming Centre. The clip features burgeoning Olympic diver, Brittany O’Brien, who was selected to compete at the Rio Olympics in 2016 after her performance at the National Championships. Laska explains, “I hit her up on insta to explain the idea after having researched the Olympic diving team as she perfectly fit the aesthetic for the character, after a few phone calls, we put it together and off we went”.
“The Golden video reflects the idea of a lonesome high, particularly in retrospect, using diving as the metaphor. I’ve often thought diving must be so exhilarating / euphoric but only really enjoyed by the few who pursue it. In a way, it reflects that ideas behind the song by representing elements of that feeling only you are left with after a specific emotional experience.”
KINGSWOOD released the first taste of new music since their 2014top 10ARIA debut album Microscopic Wars in October last year. ‘Creepin’’ described by triple j as “a smoky bait-and-switch that draws you in with moody guitar and vocalist Fergus Linacre’s soulful growl before broadsiding you with dirty, leather-scuffing riffage” was added straight to the stations playlist, just came in at #48 in the triple j Hottest 100 2016 and and has garnered over 420k online streams.
After Hours, Close To Dawn, which has already been named in Rolling Stone Australia’s 50 Most Anticipated Albums of 2017 as well as The Herald Sun’s Biggest New Albums in 2017, sees KINGSWOOD move to the frontline of innovators in Australian music. It mixes compelling R’n’B grooves with soaring rock & roll, garage soul and space-age experimentation. It’s an eclectic collection of music, but it’s all connected by the defining element that is the trio’s creative DNA. No matter what shape they take, these songs are still instantly recognizable as pure KINGSWOOD.
