What better way to spend your Saturday night then to spend it at The Boston for A Very Filthy Xmas, whether you celebrate Christmas or not, The Boston had it covered. For the fourth consecutive year All This Filth have brought you the greatest Xmas entertainment money could buy, with an amazing line up of Perth’s finest talent.
The openers for the event were punk influenced hardcore band Dying Degree, with their groovy riffs and a dancing vocalist Tony Westwood who really brought life to the stage and the crowd. These guys dominated as an opening act and really got the crowd lubricated and ready to rock out for the rest of the gig. As a new-found fan of the band I hope to be seeing a lot more of these guys in the years to come. Dying Degree were the perfect candidates for this years Filthy Xmas, as the only band for the night with a mixture of clean vocals and violent screams they really know how to get the fans moving. Thankfully vocalist Tony didn’t throw up mid song as many of us in the crowd had feared after he made the grave mistake of filling his guts with a chicken kebab just moments before jumping on stage, with a mid-show warning from the man himself, but he managed to hold his own and still deliver an amazing performance.
Second on the bill was brutal groovecore masters Constructs who never fail to deliver their fair share of organised chaos. This four-piece band was a real crowd pleaser, as they always are every time I see these guys. From their crushing riffs to their insane drum work and of course the sheer brutality that comes from vocalist Jim Skinner. These guys were just all round breathtaking to see destroy the stage, with some of the nicest guys in the Perth metal scene they sure know how to be the bringers of destruction. It goes without saying that Constructs were brilliant in what they do best and definitely a fan favourite for the night. Closing their set with the song Post Death they sure left the crowd in awe, and rightfully so.
To make the night even better was Perth band Banyon. With their progressive modern death metal style, insane gutturals and brutal breakdowns we really got to experience the torment put upon us by these legends. For being only the second time I’ve seen these guys kill the stage I can definitely say I’m a fan and will be sure to look out for them in the future. There couldn’t have been a better band to fill the line up for the night. Banyon really complimented the sound that the event was going for and as the night went on it kept on getting better and better while the crowd was getting more and more insane. Banyon slayed the stage and kept everybody in the spirit of the holiday season.
One of Perth’s legends, Kimura, came on for the second last act for the night and as always they were brilliant. Playing a mixture of songs from their first EP Uncaged and their latest instalment of Kintsukuroi these groove metal masters sure know how to keep their fans happy. During their set they had a guest appearance from the amazing Grant Gatford doing vocals for the song Psychotically Sane, which is a personal favourite of mine. As well as celebrating the birthday for bassist Stuart Betts, Kimura always have so much to offer and they did not disappoint for their fourth consecutive year at A Very Filthy Xmas.
Headlining for the night was the almighty All This Filth, some of Perth’s best talent wrapped up in a filthy surprise. These guys really know how to get the juices flowing and perform some amazing tunes. Opening their set with the title track from their first album 11 Past absolutely blowing people away, from headbanging metal heads to circle pits its safe to say they can always keep the fans happy and surprised. Performing their new song I Still Hate and from the sounds of things their next album is going to be a masterpiece, we can only wait and see. They blew people away when they played a cover of Nailbomb’s Wasting Away, a perfectly executed song just showing us how good they really are. There’s no surprise that All This Filth is one of Perth’s most favoured bands with some of the most loyal fans any musician would be lucky to have. Be sure to check them out for their first ever international support for American death metal band Once Human, these guys deserve the recognition and I have no doubts that they will succeed in their pursuit for greatness.
