Modest Mouse performed at Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, New Jersey on October 11, 2017. They are an American Rock band that formed in 1992. Modest Mouse has eight current band members and play a variety of instruments. For this nearly sold out show, a Toronto band Metz joined them on the bill.
Before the band walked on stage, fans were cheering and clapping as they waited for the show to start. The band opened up to the fan favorite “The Tortoise and the Tourist” which is featured on their 2015 album titled, “Strangers to Ourselves”. The cheering from the crowd got louder once the band started played the song. Colorful lights flashed on the stage and you could feel the energy of everyone in the room.
The set list also included, “Dramamine” which is mostly an instrumental song with minimal lyrics. After watching the music video and listening to the song, it reminds me of my cross country road trip out West. This song mostly has guitar and choral effects. I think it is a beautiful song and very relaxing; a song that will definitely be played in the car on my next road trip!
Another song that they played off their setlist was “This Devil’s Work Day”. This song is the tenth track on their album “Good News For People Who Love Bad News”. It is the band’s fourth full-length album, which won a nomination in 2005 for a Grammy for Best Alternative album. You can really hear the horns throughout the song, which is a change from the rest of the album. It gives the song a real jazzy feeling.
The band ended the show with “Positive/Negative” which is from their second EP “Interstate 8”. This EP was released in 1996. The crowd cheered during the instrumental part of the song. This wrapped up a six-song encore performance. Following this show, Modest Mouse continued on the final weeks of their tour. The last stop was at the LA Waterfront in Los Angeles, California on October 28th.
