Slowly Slowly’s frontman Ben Stewart is an arresting and fascinating figure. This exemplary songwriter has knack for making the banal very beautiful via moving, vintage style indie-rock songs. On ‘Aliens’, this is complemented by the sparkle and shimmer of the DIY production, building just to the precipice of bust. Ben Steward elaborates, “the song is a stream of consciousness, equal parts self-loathing and self-pity. I wrote it in my car on my phone in about 4 minutes. I guess that’s why it kind of sucks.” It’s this brand of self-effacing fallibility that makes Slowly Slowly such a likable, organic rock act that they inspires fanatical adoration.
