Sydney singer-songwriter Stu Tyrrell will be appearing at the Gulgong Folk Festival between December 29-31.

The Gulgong Folk Festival features traditional and contemporary folk, blues, Celtic and roots.
For 2017, The Bushwackers Bush Band, Gleny Ray Virus, Whiskey Dram, Henk Groot and Stringline will feature among blackboard concerts, sessions, workshops, poet’s breakfasts, guitar and song writing comps, and a New Year’s Eve Bush Dance. As the winner of last years Gulgong Festival Guitar Competition, Stu has been invited to the judging panel for this years event, to be held at Prince Of Wales Opera House on Saturday, December 30.

Breathing new life into traditional English and Celtic Folk songs, Stu re-imagines them into stomping arrangements with a decidedly Australian roots flavour. Stu’s original material speaks of social justice and solidarity while touching on his personal experiences of love, loss, depression and triumph.
A regular on the festival stage; Stu has played the Australian Celtic Festival, Beechworth Celtic Festival, and Kilmore Celtic Festival.  He has also been the touring bassist for ex Iron Maiden frontmen Paul Dianno and Blaze Bayley on their Australian tours.  In May this year Stu launched his debut EP Celtic Roots in Australia’s Celtic capital, Glen Innes during Celtic Weekend. The EP features one original song with full instrumentation and four traditional Celtic and English Folk arrangements stripped down to Stu’s signature roots-infused sound. Celtic Roots begins with an acoustic version of the Iron Maiden classic Number Of The Beast a track that fuses together Stu’s Celtic and Heavy Metal influences perfectly.

The follow up to Celtic Roots, Funky Lizard Sessions was recorded at Newcastle’s Funky Lizard Studios in March 2017. The half-day recording session with Robbie Long was Stu’s prize for winning the 2016 Gulgong Folk Festival Guitar Competition; Track 01 Celtic Medley being the winning composition.
