ALBUM REVIEW: Bad Bones – High Rollers

Sliptrick Records - October 23rd 2018

bad bones high rollers

Opening with the single ‘American Days’ Bad Bones come across like a modern melodic take on late eighties American Radio Rock. Whilst some bands like to look back fondly and recreate the past you get the feeling that Bad Bones like to give their material a distinctly modern slant.

To be honest its not bad at all especially when they get all melodic like on the sweeping ‘Lost Again’ which really sums up the band sonically – simple, straight to the point, melodic with little bottom-end and plenty of light bright notation.

Elsewhere the ballads and mid-tempo numbers work pretty well, particularly ‘Wild Rose’ which sounds rather like Danger Danger but ‘Solitary Fields’ works well too. But there’s a lot more to catch your ear: the riff rocking ‘Midnight Rider’ which really is their staple hard rocking fare shows that four albums in the band are pretty tight and ‘Blood Trails’ might just be the real highlight here as it brings in a slight edge in the guitar sound that is smoothed over elsewhere.

All in all a very nice album for those who appreciate their melodic rock with a modern edge, and the album closes with a rather nice cover of Steve Miller Band’s ‘Rock ‘n Me’ and we all know that a little Steve Miller can never be a bad thing.
