Due out May 4, Parkway Drive’s latest album Reverence is the most sonically adventurous and emotionally intense effort yet from the Byron Bay-based five-piece. We take a look at the new songs in our latest review.
Byron bay veterans Parkway Drive have returned with Reverence, album number six and from the outset this opening track “Wishing Wells” is an ominous beast to say the least with the opening line “I’ve asked about today and asked if god would come and play I’ve dug a shallow hole for him to sleep” then a few moments later the whiplash inducing riffage kicks in that most fans have come to know and respect. With the next track “Prey” I can envision it becoming an anthem for packed out shows across the world with lines like “I’ve got an axe to grind and a crooked mind you better watch your back”.
Now down to the nuts and bolts you want to know what this album sounds like as it has been much anticipated, well it takes elements from every album and throws it into a large pot. A strange analogy I know but it’s not old Parkway, it’s not anything new, it sits comfortably in the middle. The key word I can think of is diversity.
The stand out track for me here is “Cemetery Bloom” as it is the heart of the album with a sinister electro pulse that runs through it, also of note the track “In Blood” lyrically this feels like a very personal war cry, almost cathartic in places.
Parkway Drive are one of Australia’s top musical exports and with this album they showcase some real hard fought, well honed writing and unrivaled ability which in today’s climate of try to out do one another is refreshing. No tricks to be seen here, just a solid album that is sure to keep fans coming back for more for months and years to come. Well done boys you should be proud!
