Well this is all rather 70’s in outlook. Poor Little Things debut EP recalls a time when rock was simpler and acts like Suzi Quatro was huge and that’s largely the vibe I get from openers ‘Rock ‘N’ Roller’ and the sing-along ‘Break Another Heart’. If that’s your bag then this is certainly something worth looking into deeper.
‘Drive’ adds some mid-paced head nodding retro rock and ‘About Love’ slows the mood further and even comes with a touch of Hawaiian style guitar to augment the poppy swing. Both songs are nice and I love the experimentation and retro feel yet somehow neither click first listen, though coming back to them I can’t help but suggest that more of their hidden depths are revealed.
Closer ‘Sweet Cheetah’ has more of an Oz Rock feel, backed by a syncopated beat that recall’s ZZ Top’s Eliminator groove, it’s all cool and posturing with an almost Bolan-esque tang. For me it’s the most interesting and best thing here and the one that makes me ant to hear more.
A little hit and miss in the mid section but recommended for those that appreciate bands trying to look at things through different eyes. Some of the experimentation on here just clicks and I’ll be looking out for the next EP.
