ALBUM REVIEW: Refractory Road – Gold Light

There’s a breezy blue sky blue collar workingman’s rock feel to ‘Don’t Let The Sun set’ the first track on Northam rocker’s Refractory Road’s debut album. It’s a catchy song and augmented by some nice backing vocals and it feels like a song the band could jam for hours riffing off each other.

If you want to get a feel of the sound then I’ll let the band tell you themselves: “The band plays a mix of country blues and rock and are influenced by Paul Kelly and Bruce Springsteen”.  Elsewhere of course you’ll get glimpses of all kind of artists, decades and Genres. ‘Love Me Dear’ could be country rock or could be something Suzi Quatro could easily slip into and that’s the beauty here it seems to be an album that the band has made for themselves rather than to capture and current style or  trend.

If that sounds like your thing, or you just like to kick back to the sounds of simpler times then you can’t go far wrong with this: from the Seger meets Kelly of ‘Walking Next to You’ through the languid piano-led heartwarming country-tinged ‘Not a Casual fable’ to the ragged and soulful ‘Wanna be Saved’ which closes the album in fine style.

Soul satisfying rhythm, rock and blues…
