ALBUM REVIEW: Tangled Thoughts Of Leaving – No Tether

Tangled Thoughts of Leaving - No Tether

Perth noise act Tangled Thoughts Of Leaving are a well established band in the Perth music scene and while it may not be everyone’s cup of tea with a signature sound that can at times test the patience and ears of the average casual listener, it’s that unique quality and captivating sounds that have given success to the band.

The sonic concepts for No Tether emerged in the wake of performing Yield to Despair (2015) live. There were some tonal mine shafts in the vein of Yield that, after playing the record live repeatedly, the band felt there were greater depths to explore – longer doom passages and darker, feedback-driven tones. But the overriding feeling in the band was that there was a tangent to be taken, with faster, more free-form compositions. The addition of Paul Briggs on guitar also drove this transition.

Post rock/experimental is a extremely unique blend of various genres all wrapped up in a very open minded experience. Perth lads Tangled Thoughts Of Leaving have hit the nail on the head with their 3rd album No Tether. Emotion, soundscapes, and dark textures are carefully integrated into this 7 track opus.

The Alarmist has a definite violent -unsettling undertone. Ben Greene’s drum assault really accentuates this complex track. Cavern Ritual is unbelievably haunting with its drone-ish passages.

Signal Erosion is a multi layered, atmospheric journey, with melancholic samples and
intricate bass lines provided by Luke Pollard.  Inner Dissonance is a dramatic and emotional roller coaster ride that could quite easily be a soundtrack to a thriller.

Although this genre is not everyone’s bag of fish, TToL have delivered an ingenious and mature approach with clever songwriting skills making No Tether 7 tracks that are very different and diverse to each other. 7/10
