ALBUM REVIEW: Wayward Sons – Ghosts of Yet to Come

Frontiers Records - September 15th 2017

Everyone will remember the Little Angels – the Toby Jepson fronted band from the mid 80’s and whist various members of the band forged on musically after the split it took Jespon until the new millennium to really resurface, but since then he’s been relatively busy with solo work and Gun, as well as producing albums by bands like Saxon, The Virgimarys and The Answer. Now comes his new band ‘The Wayward Sons’.

This is an album that tips it’s hat to the glory days of 70’s and 80’s hard rock and it does a great job of bringing those classic sounds to the table on every cut. It’s also an album that never wavers in quality from the immediacy of opening rockers ‘Alive’ and ‘Until the End’ that lay the foundations, to the glorious pair of closers: the spiky rock of ‘Small Talk’ and the contrasting bluesy southern rock of ‘Something Wrong.’  Both of which are up there with the best here.

In between there’s an embarrassment of riches from the riff-riding, summer sun-evoking classic of ‘Ghost’ through the bass-led bluesy ‘I Don’t Wanna Go’ and the more modern take on the Thunder/Bad Company sound that is ‘Give It Away.’ If that’s not enough then there’s the nod to Def Leppard that is ‘Killing Time’ the modern Collective Soul grooves of ‘Crush’ and possibly the pick of the bunch the Thin Lizzy-like groove of ‘Be Still’ which just shows that some of the best Classic Rock songs are still being written.

Get ready to be seriously impressed.
