Opening up album number 3 with ‘Outta Nowhere’ there’s no fear that Worry Bast has toned down their worship at the dirty bluesy altar of AC/DC,and just to be sure ‘Dirty Mind’ pokes you right in the eye to underline the same. It’s not just xeroxing though, there’s plenty of talent at play here and the songs sound hungrier and grittier than you might imagine.
The title track’s mid tempo grunt shows they can rock at all speeds and as well as the searing guitar they do a nice line in ‘DC-like gang vocals. One thing that you have to remember is that AC/DC didn’t create this dirty bluesy Rock ‘n’ Roll they were just its most successful proponent, though I must admit it is hard not to name-check them when you listen to a band like Worry Blast.
It’s not all down to simply following the AC/DC rule-book, tough you will find that the chord progressions, lyrical content and tight rhythm section are pretty much locked in from go to whoa. There is room to maneuver and at times there are flashes of the dirtier, bluesier side of late eighties rock where bands like Guns ‘n’ Roses took the Rose tattoo/ AC/DC vibe to new places. Those moments come with tracks like the sweaty rock and roll of ‘Hot ‘n’ Ready’, the Great White meets Little Caesar swagger of ‘Rough Times’, the power-Blues of ‘Heartbreak’ and the rock and roll party anthem madness of ‘Drink it All.’
The best though may just be saved ’till last though with the rousing call to arms of closing track ‘We Can’t Stop Rock ‘n’ Roll.’ If you don’t look too closely it’s easy to dismiss Switzerland’s Worry Blast as an AC/DC or Airborne wannabe, but there’s a freshness here, and that along with some rather fine songs makes them a real contender.
