Rock four-piece Carvel have released their latest soulful and reflective single Dark Side of Me, from their upcoming self-titled EP, set for release Friday, April 27.

Carvel’s latest single Dark Side of Me is an exploration about breaking free from your negative qualities, and the regret of hurting those you love as you begin to change. Featuring a melodic bassline, grounded with a dark, complex drum tempo that sets the heartbeat of the track for its reflective and contemplative rhythm. With no chorus the track’s structure may seem unusual yet in its place is what sounds like an honest conversation between the guitar’s chimey picks and haunting vocals.

This song is different, it’s an open book where the bass and drums lay it out for myself and Tim to communicate musically. It’s one of those songs where you never quite play it the same way twice, and I love that,” said guitarist Cameron Jang.

Carvel feel this single is one of their biggest achievements as songwriters as they’re proud to create a track that allows them to express themselves so freely.

Dark Side of Me is the song we feel most proud of as songwriters. Mostly because we can’t really pin any specific inspiration for the track – it came to us naturally and set the tone for the rest of the EP,” said vocalist Timothy Tanzer.

Dummer James Jelliffe worked hard to create a unique rhythm and melody that would perfectly match the deeply personal lyrics.

The guitars, vocals and even bass guitar form intricate melodic lines and so, my goal was to give the track some foundation with a strong but unique feel that served to augment the silence and release of tension throughout the song. I wanted to keep this song dark – matching the lyrical content, so I settled on what was a complex, but relaxed and soulful rhythm,” said Jelliffe.

Dark Side of Me has Carvel returning to their raw acoustic roots infused with sparks of psychedelic pop twists that define their upcoming self-titled EP ‘Carvel’ set for release Friday, April 27.
