Drummer legend Joey Jordison may be known for his work with Slipknot over the years but his current project, Sinsaenum is a whole other beast that takes metal to the extreme. Their new album ‘Repulsion For Humanity’ was recently released and the band which includes Dragonforce member Frederic Leclercq are now heading to Australia for their first time together. We talk to Joey about the tour and the new album and what the future holds.
Andrew: So how’s things with you at the moment?
Joey: Everything has been killer man. The tour is going good, everyone is playing well. It’s growing every day and can’t complain man, everything has been killer.
Andrew: Good to hear! So the new album came out in August so what’s the feedback been like and how have people been responding to it so far?
Joey: Really good man, every day the shows are growing and the crowds are getting bigger so we’re just keeping at it and we’re going to keep on tour for a while and just keep building. So far the crowd reaction has been great and getting to the meet and greets after the show has really been helping to build the band so we get out to as many fans as possible. The shows have been killer and just keeping at it right now which is great.
Andrew: So when you’re in the process of writing and recording new songs, do you get a little excited or anxious? How do you feel before the songs get out to the public and out onto the road?
Joey: Well that just comes with when the songs are written but when we’re recording in the studio maybe we’ll extend a part here or there but usually the songs stay the same as they were written. When we record , I got to do the record in France this time, so we recorded as a band and Frederic [Leclercq, guitarist] was with me the whole time so we were kind of building the drum tracks with Nico, our engineer and that was really cool way to have this record evolve from “Echoes Of The Torture” and “Ashes”. So that’s why I really like this record, in a way this kind of seems like our first even though it’s not.
Andrew: Yeah obviously this album is a step in a different direction for you guys and it seems like that’s the biggest change from that first album, it sounds like it was more of a collaborative effort this time around.
Joey: Yeah it definitely is and it was really cool and a different experience to actually not have to do it on my own like sending tracks back and forth, which worked, that works too. But that’s what made Repulsion For Humanity” because there was more of a demand working together as a team instead of doing it on our own. Like I said that worked too because those of those records are killer, this one is just different because it was a total collaboration because we were together all the time so it was bad ass.
Andrew: Do you find that because there was a more collaborative effort this time, these songs translate to the live setting better?
Joey: I just think it’s more of an evolution, it just shows that the band is moving in the right direction and like I said we keep growing every day. That’s why it was necessary for me to travel to France this time instead of just keep doing it on my own. We could do it like that too but the band was more cohesive this time and that’s why the evolution of the band has stepped up now being on tour and everything, that’s exactly where we need to be right now.
Andrew: Sure and next month we get to see you in Australia for the first time! It’s good to see you back in Australia as I know you’ve been here before with other bands so what can fans expect from this band?
Joey: Right now we’re just completely excited to be able to come down there and have the opportunity. We’re going to bring a selection from the three releases that we have right now and we’re just go and completely bring fucking ultimate mayhem down there and the most intense metal show we possibly can and just get out and meet as many fans as possible. But when we get down there, get prepared, it’s going to be on!
Andrew: Yeah a lot of fans are looking forward to it and a lot are probably asking because there’s a lot of members from other bands, is it all original material that you guys are playing with this band or are you also picking songs from your other bands as well?
Joey: No it’s all original Sinsaenum material, not doing anything from any of our other bands. Absolutely not.
Andrew: Did you guys discuss that at all when you were first hitting the road or did you always know you would only play your own material from this band?
Joey: That was never even a discussion because we know that would never happen. We never even talked about it, we’re only playing our material.
Andrew: OK cool so for those that may not know the background of the band and from what I understand from what I have read, the idea for this band was first brought on many years ago. It was only in recent years that you guys came together and created music so where did the idea come from and why was it such a long time from when it first initially started to coming to fruition?
Joey: Well because we still had obligations with our other bands. We knew it was going to happen, we had to find the right time before we actually started our first record. So obviously Fred is busy with Dragonforce, of course I was busy with Slipknot. At the time I also had Scar The Martyr going on, of curse I had Vimic. But when we started we just had to find the right time and when it landed, it’s called seize the day, when you have that opportunity you get right to it. You don’t let that opportunity pass you by and that’s what Sinsaenum does, every time there’s an opportunity we make sure we jump right on it and make sure it’s executed because we do have other projects and stuff that we have to do. So when the time’s right, we just make sure it’s well taken care of and we do our best and get out to as many people as possible and meet as many fans as possible. So that’s what we’re doing and we can’t wait to get down there, we’re thankful for the opportunity and we just want to give some of the most brutal shows that we can while we’re down there and meet as many people as possible so we’re looking very forward to it.
Andrew: Yes it should be very good and I think the fans are very keen to see as there’s a lot of important people in this band but also the music that you have created is pretty out there and pretty extreme. Have you been catching any surprised reactions from people at all on how heavy this music is?
Joey: No not really. Everyone has been really responsive and really, ‘We’ve seen them live and they’re completely on fire’. It’s been really cool, there been not one bad show and all the fans are fuel for the fire. It’s been great so far, the fans have been great. They’re the ones keeping the fire burning so we can keep creating music all the time but the fans are really the ones that keep it moving.
Andrew: So after the Australia tour, what’s the plan for you personally and also for the band as well?
Joey: I can’t really disclose that right now. We might stay on the road, there’s tour opportunities but right now we’re going to see where that takes us. Just keep going to sinsaenum.com and you will find out, of course we will be doing press and letting everyone know what’s up. Right now we’re just sticking on the tour that we have and getting ready to keep the machine rolling.
Andrew: Cool well we are glad to see you in the country next month, looking forward to it. Thanks for your time Joey, really appreciate it and hope you enjoy the tour. We hope to see another album in the future from you guys as well.
Joey: Oh you definitely will for sure, you’ll be seeing us before you know it. Thanks for having us down there, it’s going to be killer so get ready!
