INTERVIEW: Lindsay Schoolcraft – Cradle Of Filth

Lindsay Schoolcraft

Cradle of Filth keyboardist and female vocalist Lindsay Schoolcraft is embarking on her first ever solo tour, and has chosen the far-flung and haunted shores of Australia for a round of DJ sets in Sydney, Perth and a world-first solo headline show in Melbourne.

Brought to you by Incursion Alternative Parties and Overdrive Touring, Schoolcraft’s tour will hit Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, beginning with a very special New Year’s Eve performance! Next she hits Melbourne for a show at the renowned Evelyn Hotel, before finally making her way West to throw down with her Perth fans.

We grabbed a few words from Lindsay ahead of the tour to find out what fans can expect.

Hans: Hi there Lyndsay, thanks heaps for the opportunity to chat with you.

Lindsay: Hey hey! Thanks for taking the time!

Hans: It seems like 2018 has been a very busy and productive year for you?

Lindsay: Oh yes, has it ever been. I started this year with a 5 month long world tour with Cradle of Filth with few breaks in-between. I moved, adopted a cat, really took teaching vocals and harp playing seriously. I also got my cosmetology training, so yeah! It’s been a big one.

Hans: We are really pumped to have you visiting Australia again. What are you looking forward to most while you are here? The weather is going to be perfect if you like the sun and outdoors.

Lindsay: I heard that I should hide inside during the day and only go out at night. I have packed sunscreen and my sunglasses just for trip. I am so excited to be back. I love seeing my friends and fans there, they are like family!

Hans: Growing up in the early 2000’s, Cradle of Filth were a huge influence and are still a big inspiration to many upcoming local Aussie musicians. What can fans expect from your live upcoming solo acoustic performances?

Lindsay: Some new and known songs from yours truly, a very well-known Cradle song, and also some covers as well as possibly some guest musicians up on stage!

Hans: Could you tell us about your new solo project “Schoolcraft”?

Lindsay: I decided to now use my full name and be known as “Lindsay Schoolcraft”. I have completes my solo album and it’s in limbo with the record labels right now in seeing you would like to take me on and help me release it. I promise it will for sure be out in 2019! I can’t wait to uncover all that it has to offer and who was involved in it’s creative process!

Hans: When reflecting on everywhere in the world you have performed, Australia seems to be an unusual choice to launch your first solo promotional tour. What brought that about?

Lindsay: The offer came through with the guys at Incursion and I just couldn’t say no! Cradle really keeps me busy and it came about at a time when Cradle wasn’t doing anything… ok, well it came about over the holidays and what a way to spend them!

Hans: I see you will also be performing some DJs sets during your tour? Could you tell us about that and how it might sound?

Lindsay: Definitely gritty and a visit to the early 2000’s and 90’s, but also some new stuff too! I have such a deep love for dark and spooky music, but also industrial and nu-metal.

Hans: How did you become involved with Cradle of Filth?

Lindsay: Cradle picked me up back at the end of 2012 through a friend online. I am still shocked some days that it all even happened, to be honest!

Hans: Are you able to share any crazy road stories while travelling with Cradle? I’ve always wondered about how you guys might wind down in between shows.

Lindsay: We’ve had buses break down, and magicians come visit us. We have had visits from Danzig and Ice-T. I even met one of Brittney Spears’ makeup artists. I think of the best highlights of this year for me was being on Jen Luvs Reviews Youtube Channel.

Hans: You must have to juggle a busy schedule in between touring and writing. What’s your secret? Any tips you could share for local musicians out there looking to make their way into the industry.

Lindsay: On my days off I go over my lyrics and make voice memos on my phone of new melody ideas. When I’m home I do my best to section off time to just write and track when and where I can. My best advice is to focus, work smarter and not harder! Be open to advice and educate yourself! I could teach a whole course on this, I swear.

Hans: My 10 year old daughter was accepted into her School’s music program recently and is taking up classical guitar lessons next year. Is there any advice you could give her or any youngster should they wish to take music to the next level in years to come?

Lindsay: That’s so exciting! I’m really happy for her! Let her know that just putting aside 30 minutes a day can make such a big difference and that your musical theory can translate to anything else music so if you want to try another instrument or taking up singing, dance, theatre that all your skills learned will apply!

Hans: What sort of things do you enjoy outside the world of performing and music?

Lindsay: I loves my makeup. It is really just art for the face, let’s be honest here. I like learning the dark history of countries and trying to find the most gothic of churches out there on my travels. I decorated my apartment this year and I am still torn on if I actually like home decor or not. I also find psychology, biology, and law fascinating and read up a lot on that. I also like doodling my creative ideas into my sketch book whenever I have a free minute.

Hans: Lindsay, it was a pleasure to speak with you. I wish you the very best with your upcoming tour and we look forward to seeing you perform in Perth on 5 January at the upcoming Hornography/Incursion event at The Boston.

Lindsay: I really can’t wait either! Thanks so much for having me here today and see you very soon!
