Late Metallica Bassist’s Hometown Honoring His Legacy With ‘Cliff Burton Day’

Metallica - Cliff Burton

More than three decades after his passing, Cliff Burton is being recognized with his own day.

The late Metallica bassist still stands as one of metal’s most iconic four-stringers and his hometown of Castro Valley, California will now dub Feb. 10 “Cliff Burton Day” thanks to a successful Change.org petition. The petition discusses Burton’s profound influence and continued level of respect as well as mentioning that he “honed his musical craft while living in Castro Valley and attending Castro Valley schools.” He performed in local bands like EZ Street and Agents of Misfortune, which led to his budding success in the Bay Area with Trauma and, most famously, Metallica.

The titans of thrash were elated over the news, tweeting out a picture of the proclamation, commenting, “IT’S OFFICIAL! The Board of Supervisors from Alameda County has just proclaimed February 10, 2018, which would have been Cliff’s 56th birthday, ‘Cliff Burton Day.’ Thanks to all of the fans who got behind this initiative. We love that he remains so revered

Tragically, Burton died in a bus accident at the age of 24 when Metallica were touring Europe in support of Master of Puppets. His father, Ray, has remained an important part of the Metallica camp and last summer, he revealed he had been using his son’s royalties to establish scholarship opportunities for kids at Castro Valley High School.
