Delivered with a level of passion and soul equal to the legendary sonic charge of his guitar, the sound of Carlos Santana, one of the world’s best-known musical signatures, returned to The Colosseum in Windsor, Ontario Canada on Saturday night. First of all, Santana puts on a fantastic live show. I honestly thought that I would be watching a one man band guitar wizard with a few supporting musicians set deep in the background to fill in the gaps for the duration of the show. (Not that I would be disappointed in watching Carlos dominate the stage with his guitar supremacy), but, I was wrong.
Carlos Santana is a guitar mastermind and has been orchestrating musical instruments since the age of 5 when he picked up the violin and guitar at the age of 8. Some of Santana’s earliest influences include Ritchie Valens and BB King. Carlos Santana is the recipient of 10 Grammy awards and 3 Latin Grammy awards respectively.
Watching Carlos and company will take you on a journey of musical experience like no other. Santana is not simply just a guitar oriented band and Santana is not a one man show. Their music is a blend of 50’s and 60’s old style rock n roll infused with Latin American Jazz along with African instruments timbales and congas that takes you on a mental musical excursion.
The powerful scent of incense (which Carlos uses in mediation) was in the air as I approached the stage. The evening began with an 18 minute psychedelic video intro that was reminiscent of his Woodstock days. Immediately after the video a Carlos appeared with an entourage of musicians scattered across the stage. Everyone was in dressed in white and the entire group of musicians where performing at the same level of excellence. It was apparent that Carlos intentionally illustrates the talent of each and every member performing as an intricate part of the band known as Santana.
