Saturday evening, the very first edition of Perth’s brand new monthly metal club, Hornography, took place. Metalheads both old and new flocked to the opening night, proving that gigs in this city can in fact sell out. Read all about it!
First of all, let’s talk about the concept behind the show. The whole idea of Hornography is to operate much like a social club for the local metal scene. Apparently, each monthly event is going to be slightly different with unique concepts, activities and themes. While this first one was run much like a regular gig, there was more time than usual allowed between sets so you could bond with your cool and hip metal buddies. One of the club features will be the guest DJs, with the first being DJ Stormrider Stu. He played a nice selection of the classics. From Judas Priest to Archspire, the dude had it all.
I’ve got to say that The Boston was a great choice as venue for the club. It’s still a relatively new live venue, opening its doors in 2015, but it has hosted all sorts of gigs including punk, blues and yes, metal. I love a good Irish bar, plus Rosie O’Grady’s is right next door if you’re feeling peckish. Entry was a mere 6 bucks, which is great value for a whole evening’s entertainment. The drink of choice for the night was very definitely Emu Export, which made me physically unable to write this review until 3pm the next day. It’s a Perth favourite but hits like a brick in the morning.
The first band on show was Nucleust. These guys are always super groovy and always get me moving. Their breakdowns are top notch, with the interplay of their rhythm section instruments really getting those buttocks swaying. I loved their choice of samples too. I even thought I heard some bouzouki at one point. During the final song they announced it was their bassist’s last performance with the band. I wish him the best of luck and to keep kicking arse.
Next up was Psychonaut, a mainstay of the local metal scene for many a year. They played a great set of all their classic songs. I’m a bit of a sucker for songs about classic movies, so they’re my ideal band. As a nice treat Psychonaut even performed some brand new tracks! I’ve been chomping at the bit to hear new material from them, so last night was a real treat. The new songs fit in nicely with the classics. Here’s hoping this means we’re getting a new album from these guys! I’ll be first in line to get it.
Through the night, MCs Cabba and Dysie provided much banter and FABULOUS PRIZES. There was a selection of concert tickets up for grabs in the raffle thanks for the GCCs at Soundworks. It is an injustice of the gods that I didn’t win anything, but congratulations to those who did. The lucky bastards.
Speaking of treats, it was the first time in a while I’d gotten to see Sanzu perform. For a while it seemed they always performed when I wasn’t available, but thankfully I finally managed to see the magic unfold. They really are like Australia’s answer to Gojira, with music that tramples on you like an Ent about to storm Isengard (a little Lord Of The Rings reference for you there). An extra treat was that they too had new songs to show off! Man we got some treated well that night. They played many of their other great songs too, rocking my face in the process.
For a first outing, I can confidently say that Hornography was a huge success. The next one is on the 29th of September and, in keeping with the idea of a rotating theme, is going to be a heavy metal swap meet. I may bring along some of my patches to trade! In any case I’m going to keep my frequent visitor card as I had such a good time. I will be back, and so should you! Now I’m going back to bed to nurse my hangover.
