There are occasions when gig reviewers get a night off & a chance to kick back and Saturday night was one of these evenings for me.  As I left The Astor, after being blown away by the incredible Joe Satriani, I looked at the time & felt my night was not ready to come to an end, so I headed to one of Perth’s newest bar/music venues, Lucy’s Love Shack, to see at all the fuss was about.

Once there, I was pleasantly surprised to find one of my favourite local bands were about to fire up a late night set – what a perfect way to end the night!  Lucy’s Love Shack could very well become Perth’s answer to the hugely popular and now iconic Frankie’s Pizza in Sydney, with its dark moody lighting, live gigs and the smell of freshly cooked pizzas filling the air (and a fine selection of beverages for all to enjoy).

LEGS ELECTRIC have had a terrific 2018, with a successful release of their EP ‘Two Sides’ earlier this year, resulting in them getting to play some dates over the Eastern States.  Tonight was their last live show of the year and they made sure they went out with a bang.  Ama (Quinsee – vocals), Kylie (Soanes – drums), Erin (Gooden – bass) & Elana (Haynes – guitar) not only play damn fine rock music but they look like they are having a great time on stage while they do it.  Tonight’s set list was a mixture of tracks from the latest release ‘Two Sides’, the previous EP ‘Maximum Rock n Roll’, some new tracks and a few covers thrown in for good measure.

‘Illicit Love’ kicked the evening off, as the generous crowd (including West Coast Eagles star Nic Natanui) shuffled towards the stage to support the Perth 4-piece.  ‘Wanna Riot’ was followed by a great cover of the Divinyls classic ‘Boys in Town’.  Quinsee and Soanes continually bounce off each other between songs with comical comments & anecdotes, just showing the chemistry this group has and are keen to share with the audience.  ‘Dark Paradise’ & ‘Tuesday Girl’ are followed by another great cover in the form of ‘Proud Mary’.   The band were in full swing now with songs coming thick and fast with ‘Sold Ya Soul’, ‘Strange Addiction’ and ‘Trigger’ now getting the crowd on their feet.

Cover time once more, and my favourite of the evening, this time Jimmy Barnes’s ‘Lay Down Your Guns’ getting the full Legs treatment.  ‘If’ with its ‘Black Night’ mash up was next up, followed by ‘Road Trippin’, which we were told was written whilst away on tour during their ‘Two Sides’ shows and followed by ‘Shine Right Through’.  Tonight the girls closed with a final cover, and what a closer it was with AC/DC’s ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ ending a tight and at times simply fun set.

My interest now is to see where the band can take themselves in 2019, after such a successful run this year.  Hopefully the girls can get back in the studio and capitalise on the quality of material we got to hear on ‘Two Sides’.  If you see the name ‘LEGS ELECTRIC’ on a gig guide or at a venue near you next year, stick it in your diary and get along to enjoy a night of rock n roll at its best – you won’t regret it!
