As torrential rain and wild winds battered the outside of Scarborough’s Indi Bar on Saturday Night, inside it was a night of mainly wild, live music that was making an impression on the gathering crowd.  A diverse talented line-up of local Perth musicians was on show, to support the release of Legs Electric’s latest EP Two Sides.

Starting the evening off (unexpectedly for me), was the chilled out sounds of Nu Ohm Ra, comprising of guitarist/vocalist Joshua Garner & drummer Tyler Ray MichieI was wondering how this would work without more instruments & band members, but work it did, as Josh’s mellow vocals encapsulated the room.  With musical influences ranging from David Bowie and Tame Impala through to Roberta Flack and Alice Coltrane, it’s hard to put Josh in a musical pigeon hole, but by his own admission, his musical journey has taken him to countries far and wide and this was evident in his song writing abilities.  Set List:  The Labyrinth, Natural Tendencies, New Kinda Sexy, Enigmatic, Shy Comet.

The Ivory Lies were next to plug in and fire up the room with their brand of heavy rock.  This was powerful riffs and gritty vocals aplenty, as front man & lead guitarist Liam Keaney led the band through a fast paced 6-song set, made up with a few inclusions for their 2018 EP release “Road to Seduction”.  Backed up by guitarist (and cousin) Oscar Keaney, with Scott Bingemann on Drums and bass player Abraham O’Connor, The Ivory Lies put in a tight, well balanced and energetic set.  Set List: Nothing Left (Not Even Freedom), Obsession, Drifting Away, Too Far Gone, Hell For Leather, Road To Seduction

Next to grace the stage, were the lively Foxton Kings and their brand of alternative rock, with influences from Jack White through to Royal Blood & Rival Sons.  Their charismatic front man Joel Stevens worked the crowd with ease, supported by Cliff Johnson (Guitar), Dane Koek (Bass), Alex Barker (Drums).  Once again, these guys were able to showcase the level of local live talent Perth has to offer, with fantastic original songs throughout their set.  Set List: Run Baby Run, Black Whip Lovin’, Gold, Catz, .22, Johnny Gavin, Dead n Blue, Money Money.

With a whirlwind tour of the Eastern States to look forward to later this month to promote the Two Sides EP, tonight was more about kicking back and enjoying the hard work of the last 18 months for Legs Electric, as the home crowd welcomed them to the stage.   Opening with Sold Ya Soul, the girls hit the ground running and showed they were here to have a fun night, in front of their loyal supporters.  Strange Addiction, from the new EP, was followed by Tuesday Girl, before technical issues with guitarist Elana Haynes’ amplifier, caused a short delay in the set.  But once fixed, we were up and away again, drummer Kylie Soanes driving the girls on faultlessly as always.  Next we got to hear Shine Right Through, which the girls admitted had previously never been played live.

Bassist Erin Gooden patrolled the stage, as Black Magic & Dangerous Thing were followed by crowd favourite Wanna Riot, before the girls played their latest single Dark Paradise (my personal favourite from the EP).  Vocalist Ama Quinsee was on top form again tonight, she hit all the hard notes with ease, as the girls powered through the set list.  Trigger was followed by If (with a bit of Deep Purple’s Black Night mashed in for good measure) before Kingdom closed the set and ended Legs’ triumphant launch night.
