The glam boys of fun and rock, Steel Panther have been tearing it up across Australia this past week, bringing a 2 set stage show filled with a best of set plus an addition of some classic rock covers. The tour has been filled with a highlight reel of parties and a balls to the wall riff fest with even a cameo appearance during ex-Guns N’ Roses drummer Steven Adler’s tour along the way but the party came to an end in Perth for the final show down under as our resident rock reporters witnessed on the night.
Tonight I was privileged to witness the final show of the Steel Panther “A Night On The Sunset Strip” tour and with no opening band to speak of, it was straight into the fun and games. Now anyone who has been reading my reviews for a while now knows that I have written about “party” bands and these guys were all that and more, from the opening track of “Eyes Of The Panther” we knew that we were in for a treat.
Front man Michael Starr was the ultimate frontman in every sense of the word, bringing the hair metal tag out in all its hair spray glory reminiscent of the 80’s hey day. As for lead guitarist Satchel, well he was absolutely next level in terms of his playing style and finesse while Lexxi Foxx on bass and backup vocals was awe inspiring and Stix Zadinia on drums completed the raucous outfit. Now the other side of this show was joke after joke and audience participation in the form of sing alongs and banter was a key component of the show keeping everyone laughing for a majority of the night.
Standout tracks included “Death To All But Metal” and “Rock You Like A Hurricane” but the set was a really huge mixed bag taking in all five albums that the band has plus cover songs including Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar On Me”, a ripping rendition of “Jump” by Van Halen and the highlight for me was the Ozzy Osborne classic “Crazy Train”.
If you haven’t seen these guys yet you’ve been living under a rock! In my humble opinion one of the best gigs to roll into Perth for 2018 so far and it is sure to have the punters that were in attendance talking for days, thanks for a fantastic gig guys. Until next time, party on!
