The Blues is wonderful, there you are working your way through the greats and everywhere you turn there’s ‘new’ artists like Big Daddy Wilson to discover who just blow your mind! The Blues is alive and well that’s for certain!
Originally known for his Acoustic Blues Big Daddy Wilson has changed tack here producing a record that is full of Soul, and it all starts with the wonderful slow Blues of ‘I Know (She Said)’and the punchier ‘Ain’t Got No Money.’
In an album that is quite simply wonderful from start to finish there are still a few that really stand out. The first of those is ‘Mississippi Me’ a sublime keyboard ballad that really brings out the very best in Big Daddy’s baritone vocal.
The title track ‘Deep In My Soul’ is a glorious lesson in song-writing, taking a kernel and building something huge, with such poise and style and grace you’ll be swept up in it. It’s probably my song of the year.
Elsewhere you’ll be won over by the tempestuous ‘I’m Walking,’ the powerful ‘Voodoo’ and the Gospel driven acoustic staple ‘Couldn’t Keep It To Myself’.
Germany based he may be, but Wilson has managed to capture a snapshot of the South here, taking on a range of styles and themes in a soulful journey of rediscovery. Very good indeed.
