ALBUM REVIEW: Burnt Out Wreck – This Is Hell

Don’t you love it when you get a new album you really wouldn’t mind knowing just a little about and with the folder comes just a few pictures of the band, a lyric sheet, a future gig guide and no bio. All I know about Burnt Out Wreck for sure at this stage is that they don’t take themselves seriously judging by the lyrics and at least one of them likes horses judging by the pictures.

Time to push on and hit ‘play’…

Now it makes sense, this is Blues based Hard Rock in the vein of the Antipodean-via-Glasgow giants who need no name-check with more of a cheeky Bon Scott vibe lyrically, throw in some tasty licks, a little hint of Quo and all in all it’s a rather refreshing ‘back to the roots’ take on Rock and Roll, keeping it all nice and simple.

It’s all rather enticing and it wasn’t until I got deeper in that I realised that Gary Moat who sings here was drummer for Heavy Pettin’ back in the day and no stranger to writing a great tune.

‘Dead or Alive’ leads the charge here and ticks all the boxes if you’re looking fora  great riff to hang a song on and the ‘Bon-era AC/DC’ comparisons are inescapable, I love it and there’s eight other tunes to gorge on from the tongue in cheek Quo-isms of ‘Paddywhack’ and the whiskey-soaked Southern Rock of ‘Just a Dog’ to the hard rocking ‘Hard Rock Sticky Sweet’ and the wonderful closing anthem ‘Snow Falls Down.’ This is one you’ll be listening to again and again.

Burnt Out Wreck are: Gary Moat – Lead Vocals, Alex Carmichael – Bass, Paul Gray – Drums, Adrian Dunn – Lead Guitar, backing vocals, Miles Goodman  – Rhythm Guitar, backing vocals
