ALBUM REVIEW: Electric Citizen – Helltown

Riding Easy Records

If you’re looking for a vintage-sounding weighty slab of Sludge, Doom proto-Heavy Metal and have a listening list that ranges from Sabbath to Kyuss then Electric Citizen should probably already be essential listening.

Indeed, three albums into their career the band who hail from Cincinnati, Ohio, have returned with a record named after their hometown – Northside which was commonly referred to as Helltown in the 1800’s due to its rather raucous reputation.

Opening with ‘Heart Attack’ if you’re hooked from the off then you’ll be in for the long haul, and if you love the vocals that for me reside somewhere between Ozzy and Frank Starr (Four Horsemen) then this is a band you’ll love.

Check out the bedrock songs like ‘Lunch’ and ‘Mother’s Little Reject’ that explore that Doomy territory so ably. But you’ll also want to take in the obverse – the more traditional Rock sounds of ‘Hide It In the Night’ and ‘Ripper’ that really set this record alight. Best of all though might just be ‘The Pawn’ that takes things one step further an injects some real urgency into proceedings.

This is a nice leap forwards from a band that will I’m sure have so much more to come.
