Formed in 2017 Indianhead have a sound that resonates through the ages – bluesy Hard Rock with a soul set in the 70’s but with a 90’s Grunge fuzz and a nice Southern Rock kick. For a lover of this kind of music ‘Songs From the Deluge’ ticks all the boxes – there’s some great riff rockers, finely-crafted acoustic ballads and some wonderful delta slide, and our review copy also came with a bottle opener, and that’s already come in handy!
Starting out with a song like ‘Poison Well’ you can’t go far wrong there’s a deep furrowed groove and hard rock feel with a definite Alice in Chains overtone. There’s more swing to ‘Grandma’s Stone’ that follows but that same aggression and darkness that characterizes there sound on this debut.
‘Memphis at Midnight’ loosens up a bit, it still has that dark core but its this song and ‘Carry the Weight’ that really give some depth to their sound, and it’s the acoustic ‘John’s Song that adds yet another layer.
These guys can certainly play, the production is good and whilst the mood here is definitely downcast there is plenty of variety on display. On one level you can tell that Alice in Chains and Soundgarden and Clutch are big influences on these guys and vocally we’re certainly right in there with that wonderful company, but its that Bluesy edge that really spins things. I love the feel of ‘Swamp’ probably my favourite here or maybe it’s the infectious groove of ‘Slackjaw Suzie’. One things for sure with 13 tracks and not a dud in sight Indianhead may just be one to watch.Great debut.
