EP REVIEW: Blackbird Sons – ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Ain’t Dead’

Independent - May 24th 2019

I loved these guys from the very first listen, and their debut EP ‘Back in the Game’ is a great mix of timeless tunes and modern songwriting sensibilities with an eye firmly fixed on the great Rock of the ’70’s when Rock was exciting and could take you anywhere. This Finnish four-piece, founded in 2016,understand that and play great ‘back to basics’ Rock and Roll, where the blue infused riffs and  grooves are the real soul of the music.

Preceded by the first single and title track ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Ain’t Dead’ the EP adds another four tracks: the stomping laid back and red hot groove of ‘Rolling’; the slow build and AC/DC nod that is ‘She is Evil’; the harder edged bluesy hard rocking stylings of ‘Break Me Down’ and the southern-tinged riff ride of closing track ‘Running Away’ which might just be my current favourite here.

If you’re a fan of vintage AC/DC then there’s much to love here especially some of cast iron riffs and the guitar breaks, but Blackbird Sons are certainly no tribute act, it’s simply that their love of music and that raw rock and roll sound is their common ground.

Listen to that title track and tell me those feet don’t feel the urge to stamp and that head of yours starts to nod ready for action. As I said last time out – Finland Rocks!
