INTERVIEW: Kevin Curran – Hailmary

Hailmary

Hailmary are a world class rock outfit out of Perth that delivers intricate slabs of grungey rock that packs a punch and soothes the soul. Having toured internationally including Europe and the US and supporting Ugly Kid Joe in the UK and extensively hitting the road in Australia with the likes of Superheist and Fuel, Hailmary have earned a reputation as being one of the countries hardest working bands. With their latest release “Evolve Dissolve” featuring some of their heaviest work to date, these guys are one not to miss.

We talk to frontman Kevin Curran about the upcoming event as well as find out all the latest with Hailmary and work on new music.

It’s great to see you part of this year’s Metal United World Wide, what can people expect in your set?

We are hopefully gonna showcase some new material from our as of no untitled album, we been working hard on crafting the songs so hopefully we can [get] a couple of new ones to debut, big riffs aplenty.

How do you pick out a setlist and is that a difficult process?

We have enough material where we can shape our set to lean more towards a heavier slant for a gig such as this or change it up depending on the kind of bill we are on.

What is your favorite song to play live?

Our Song “Yellow Light of Death tends to work really well live, its a quick 2 and half minutes of riffage that gets the job done.

How has the experience of playing live been like for the band so far?

It’s so varied, especially playing in Perth, you just don’t know what your going to get, touring the UK was massive for our live performance, playing 16 dates in a row really tightens the band up, so yeah we always give it our all.

Any favorite places to play live?

In Perth , we always seem to have a good show at Newport in Freo for some reason, really digged playing the Charles too, Loved the Espy in Melbourne in the UK the garage in Glasgow was amazing and also had great shows at underworld in Camden.

Any stand out shows or personal highlights from a tour or show?

Yeah playing the Garage in Glasgow was special for me, I was originally born in Scotland so to play in Scotland was big for me and it was supporting Ugly Kid Joe who were the first band I ever bought with my own money

What is in store fur the future for Hailmary after Metal United?

We got another gig playing at the Perth Rocks festival which should be cool, we are just gonna continue writing and hopefully get something out later this year.

How did Hailmary form and get started?

Formed a long time ago, by myself and former guitarist Todd Fishwick with some help from the now defunct perthbands.com website, Vas (Drummer) came pretty soon after and away we went.

What have been your greatest challenges to date, and your favourite moments musically?

Just playing and travelling, it is challenging to put it all together but making music can be really draining too but the reward when you have your finished product is really rewarding.

With technology changing so much over the last few years and seemingly not slowing, and TV force-feeding us the lowest common denominator, what hope is there for rock & metal music?

I don’t want to be negative but I just don’t see it having another boom period, Rock and Metal is kinda the underground again, to find your new favourite band you have to dig for them as mainstream is gonna give you well bland generic shit.

From what you’ve learned so far what is the most valuable advice you’ve been given so far as a musician?

I cant say I’ve been given advice as such but I think I’ve learnt most from making mistakes, you have to fuck up to get better at what you do.

Who are some of your main influences?

Early stuff like beatles /Doors onto the Black Sabbath, Zeppelin era, then all the 90’s bands AIC, Soundgarden etc, big fan of Metal too.

Who or what inspired you to be in a band and play music?

I had a band in school formed out of our music class, we played a few lunch time concerts and from that point on I knew that’s what I wanted to do, Nathan Caveleri was the reason I started playing  guitar as I seen him on Telethon and my parents were so impressed by him that I wanted to do the same haha.

How do you feel about the current music scene right now?

There are a lot of great bands that don’t have the platform to get to that next level, its super hard for a band to break through, by no fault of their own. Just getting on those festivals/tours is hard cos there is sooo many bands fighting for the same spot.

Do you believe music can still change the world?

That’s a hard one, I just don’t think people value music like they once did, sure songs are still affecting peoples lives and helping them through tough times but it’s been so long since you have seen any major impact like we seen in the past , especially in rock and metal, that maybe things are just not like that anymore and we are just in a different time.

If you could be a fly on the wall for the recording of any album in history, what album would it be?

Maybe LA Women by the Doors, I heard a lot of stories of Jim being wild during that recording, it would have been really entertaining to sick back and witness it.

What is the meaning of life?

To not think about what the meaning of life is, just try to enjoy everyday you have, you may never get that answer.
