INTERVIEW: Tim Henwood – Palace Of The King

Palace Of The King

Formed in late 2012, Palace of the King, have become known for their bluesy, soul-infused, riff-heavy, psychedelic rock n roll. The band supported their recent album Get Right With Your Maker with near constant touring throughout 2018, including a huge 8 country European tour before heading back to Australia for sold out, seperate tours with Baby Animals, Rose Tattoo and The Screaming Jets and more recently with Aussie legends The Poor. Come October 12th the band are geared up for a headline slot at The Rockpit’s 10th anniversary show with some of Melbourne’s best rock acts so we caught up with frontman Tim Henwood to find out the latest with the band and grab an update on some of our regular featured questions.

Tell us a little about your latest track “One Of These Days” and how it came together. Will the track be for a future album release?

One Of These Days began as a piece of music that Sean and Cam put together in the first writing session for our next album (yet to be named). We then proceeded to hit the recording studio where we recorded the first bunch of tracks including this one and from there I wrote the vocal parts and produced up the track. It certainly will be on the next album. We are half way though making the album and it will be released in Feb 2020.

The video is interesting and a little throwback to yesteryear, what inspired you to do that kind of video?

I was thinking about ideas for the clip that weren’t your usual things and when I saw this footage it screamed to be used for this clip. We then had a talented young film editor make the mouths look like they are singing the song and it came up great!

It’s great to see you part of The Rockpit’s 10th anniversary show in Melbourne, what can people expect in your set?

We were honoured to be asked! We’re gonna pull out all the stops, playing old and new songs for old and new fans.

How do you pick out a setlist and is that a difficult process?

It seems to be getting harder as time goes on and we have released 2 EP’s and 3 Albums over our time. But ultimately we try to keep it fresh and add new songs and rotate the older songs in and out.

What is your favorite song to play live?

At the moment it’s Get Right With Your Maker. The band plays it really well and I enjoy the sentiment and connecting with the music.

How has the experience of playing live been like for the band so far?

It’s always my favourite part, playing live. It’s what it’s all about. Connecting with the music, the other band members and the crowd. It can be a magical thing sometimes.

Any stand out shows or personal highlights from a tour or show?

Playing with Airbourne in Sydney was a great early show followed by our own show late that same night. It was magic. Every European tour has been a highlight for me of course. And hitting LA was pretty cool too.

How did Palace Of The King form and get started?

The band was started when I was asked to join and the rest of the guys were already in place. We hit it off straight away and quickly started writing songs and playing many, many gigs.

What have been your greatest challenges to date, and your favourite moments musically?

Greatest challenge is to not go broke as the band gets bigger and busier.. Favourite moment musically for me is the – Get Right With Your maker, album.

From what you’ve learned so far what is the most valuable advice you’ve been given so far as a musician?

Don’t try to sing so loud and your tone will be better..

Who are some of your main influences? Who or what inspired you to be in a band and play music?

All the 60’s UK bands and the American blues artists before them. I can’t remember why I wanted to start, but I just knew playing guitar was for me. Later, bands like KISS and AC/DC really inspired me to play rock music.

With bands like Ablaze, Massive, Tequila Mockingbyrd & Dead City Ruins all touring Europe this year, how do you feel the Australian music scene is ranked right now? Are we in a strong position compared to other countries?

I think Australian music is always highly regarded in Europe because of our forefathers and the amazing in roads they made. Aus bands will always be given a shot because of bands like AC/DC and Rose Tattoo paving the way. Then it’s up to the band to come up with the goods.

What is in store for the future of Palace Of The King after the Rockpit show?

We have some big things to announce, and then 2020 will bring our new album and more touring of course.
