It may have been Australia Day but that didn’t stop music fans from rocking out to some metal as Canadian prog/thrash pioneers Voivod returned to Sydney after a couple of decades to remind people why their cult status is well cemented in music history.
Celebrating 35 years is no small achievement but Voivod have been through hell and back and come through to the otherside. The fact that they return to Australia then is well noted and for those that caught their set at The Crowbar this past Saturday, it was a stark reminder just how influential this band has become. Their latest release “The Wake” has enjoyed some renewed interest in the band but the sci-fi inspired group haven’t forgotten their roots as they shared with the fans some classic material off such seminal albums as Killing Technology, Dimension Hatröss, Nothingface and more.
Supporting Voivod were NSW modern metal act Carbon Black who recently released their own new album, local Sydney thrashers Head In A Jar and Melbourne eclectic prog heroes Contrive headed by the Haug brothers duo Paul and Andrew and who also supported Voivod on 2 other shows on this tour.
