Swiss metal duo Bolzer took the Aussie reigns this past week with a headline run of shows which ended in Perth on Sunday night.

I for one was really looking forward to this show including two high calibre local support acts and coming all the way from Switzerland, Bolzer!!

The Swiss blackened death duo returns to Perth for the first time since 2015 for their final show on their Australian tour, this time as the headliner, extending their tour to grace our city. I was impressed the last time I saw them as a support and this time they did not disappoint.

Opening the show on this rainy Sunday night was Perth local band Solum with ‘Evoking the Bulge’; setting the vibe with their chunky, sludgy sound and guttural vocals, treating us to some new material and a wicked stage presence.

Second up was veteran Perth black metal band Wardaemonic. Armoured and donning corpse paint, the tremolo picking, fast riffs, shrieking dual vocals and blast beats draw in the crowd, many of them loyal fans, with their energetic presence – It’s a sea of synchronised heading bobbing.

Members of Bolzer – KzR (Okoi Jones) on guitar and vocals and HzR (Fabian Wyrsch) on drums, hit the stage barefoot and begin with a long atmospheric build up leading into their first song ‘Roman Acupuncture’. The venue has filled out by this point and the crowd are loving it, there is a lot of hype.

Use of a vocal delay creates an eerie effect and to me, cements the reputation that psychedelics are an influence on the music.

KzR is impressively fast on his Gitarren Total ten string guitar which is custom built like a tank. Hidden in the dark, HzR is super-fast and concentrated in his drumming, not even flinching as KzR swings a kick to the tom.

Bolzer smashed it out for their final show on our shores. What a solid set and overall for a two piece what a monstrous sound!
