The King has returned to Chicago! On an otherwise cold and gloomy Monday in fall, metalheads had one thing to look forward to and that was the return of King Diamond. Packing The Riviera Theater in Chicago, IL King Diamond and company brought what a legendary show to town and proved why he will forever remain a dominant legendary voice in heavy metal.
Opening up the evening was UK rockers Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats. With their heavy riff filled Sabbath influences the band brought a different feel to the evening with a darker heavier feel compared to what was to come. Playing a set featuring songs from their entire catalog the band made sure to showcase their skills to a crowd who seemed equal parts familiar fans and new faces.
With one of the biggest non arena stage shows I’ve ever seen a band use it was time for King Diamond and company to come out. Being rolled out on a medical bed the King was front and center to kick off an evening full of theatrics, metal, and nonstop excitement from the crowd. Featuring a new single, the bands first since 2007 (with a new album coming out in 2020) the fans were treated to music spanning 30+ years.
Speaking of 30+ years, King Diamond himself was in top form as well. Its almost unnatural how his voice sounds not only sounds the same, but seemingly gets better with age. His band as well hasn’t lost a step including original guitarist Andy LaRocque. You can’t mention a King Diamond show without the constant theatrics as well. From stabbing the Abigail doll to communions and of course Grandma.
If you missed this show or tour shame on you. King Diamond is only getting better with age both sound and performance wise. With a new album in 2020 he mentioned that he will return soon so fans can hopefully expect some sort of tour in 2020.
