Last Saturday night the cosy little atmosphere at Lucy’s Love Shack was rattled by a monstrous night of punk rock as Nick Oliveri and Svetlanas bring their tour to Perth. It was a different crowd than I would normally go amongst and I was in awe. What a wicked night !
First up was local pop punk band Two for Flinching kicking off the night. This four piece is high energy with fast catchy tunes, they got the crowd warmed up and people started to move with the vocalist being personable and interactive down in the audience. They played a new song for the first time live which was received well. For their last song they called up a guest female guitarist, the vocalist handing her his guitar as he then continued his vocals off stage and in the crowd.
Second was Nick Oliveri with his solo Death Acoustic set playing an awesome mix of songs spanning his whole career. He encouraged the crowd to come in closer and thanked everyone for coming. He opened with ‘Green Machine’ by Kyuss and played Queens of the Stone age songs ‘Gonna leave you’,’ Another Love Song‘ and ‘Auto Pilot’, encouraging punters to sing a long. A Dwarves song and a GG Allin cover of ‘Outlaw Scumfuc’ also made an appearance along with some of his solo works and he finished his set by doing his screaming vocal parts of QOTSA song ‘Six Shooter’ stating “he couldn’t play it on guitar, so he’ll just scream it” which was immensely entertaining.
Up next were Russian thrashcore punks Svetlanas. Dubbed the most dangerous band in the world and banned in their own country the band now resides in Italy. The crowd is packed in tight by this point, the anticipation is thick.
Olga Svetlana is an animated powerhouse on vocals and full of attitude as she is joined on stage by Oliveri, both screaming their guts out and his vocals complimenting hers awesomely. Her stage presence is menacing with her crazy eyes, full on stares, headbanging and hand gestures.
As the band then put their middle fingers up to the crowd, the crowd responded by doing the same in anticipation for the song ‘Put your Middle Fingers Up’. They also played songs from their most recent album “This is Moscow not L.A” including Lose Control, Tell Me Why and People Suck.
Non-stop true punk at its best!
Last up for the night was Perth local five-piece Fuzz Toads who opened with QOTSA ‘Regular John’, their vocalist doing his rendition of the song. They were then joined by Nick Oliveri doing dual vocals for a few Kyuss songs and then ‘El Rodeo’ with Nick playing bass as Fuzz Toad vocalist plays a triangle into the microphone saying he ‘never thought he’d get the chance to use one of these’. Nick then proceeded to swap between bass and vocals for the rest of the set that consisted of QOTSA and Kyuss hits. A highlight for the crowd was QOTSA song ‘Millionaire’ from the 2002 album ‘Songs For The Deaf’ with Nick on bass and screaming vocals.
As the night came to an end they did a full band rendition of ‘Green Machine’ and then ‘Feel Good Hit of The Summer’ by QOTSA as the crowd sings along. The night was a full-on punk and rock onslaught.
