American deathcore stars Whitechapel just kicked off the tour Chaos & Carnage, co-headlining with American death metal mainstays from Maryland Dying Fetus. They are supported by Revocation, Fallujah, Spite, Uncured and Buried Above Ground. Whitechapel released their seventh studio album called The Valley less than a month ago on March 29th.
The tour was opened in New Jersey on Thursday night of April 18th, and as most first shows, had some timing issues. First headliners Dying Fetus came on stage about forty minutes past their set time, while Whitechapel subsequently had hour delay in their set time. However no one seemed to complain. Everybody enjoyed the opening bands, and had a good time.
Dying Fetus came on heavy, opening with In The Trenches and Fixated on Devastation. And honestly speaking they never let down their foot from the gas pedal with relentless blast beats filling the ballroom the entire time. Their main set band finished with Seething with Disdain, but that was not all. For encore they played three songs – One Shot One Kill, Subjected to Beating and finished off their night with Wrong One to Fuck With.
At vocals and guitar the only remaining founder of the band John Gallagher delivered all the goods we come to expect from him, with Sean Beasley on bass and Trey Williams on drums.
Despite the delay on the night the Ballroom in Sayreville stayed full, everybody were patiently waiting for Whitechapel’s arrival. The stage was transformed from the dark Dying Fetus tones to more modern lightshow theme. Besides, Dying Fetus is a three man show, while Whitechapel have five band members and a touring drummer.
Whitechapel opened their set with two songs from their new album When a Demon Defiles a Witch and Forgiveness is Weakness. For both songs it was first time they were played live. They followed with a mix of older songs and new stuff, many of the new songs were already made public since November of the last year as singles, so the audience was already familiar enough with them.
The band themselves including vocalist Phil Bozeman didn’t waste much time explaining to the crowd what song comes next and mostly just went on delivering one punch after another. Their performance was electrifying, music was as blinding as the light show behind them. Phil delivered songs in his deep voice with anger and purpose, while all the guitar gang consisting of Ben Savage, Alex Wade, Zach Householder and Gabe Crisp on bass were perfect.
The band finished off their set with The Saw Is The Law and Our Endless War from their fifth and highest charting album with the same name. The Tour is young and an absolute must for anyone who likes death metal and deathcore. Chaos and Carnage will continue until May 17th for a total of 24 shows.
