Sydney-based alternative-rock band RedHook have returned with their latest offering ‘Fake’ – produced by Stevie Knight (Yours Truly, Stand Atlantic, The Dead Love) and Dave Petrovic (Tonight Alive, Northlane).
‘Fake’ opens with the menacing whispered vocals of lead singer Emmy Mack, before dropping into the trademark frenetic riffs of guitarist Craig Wilkinson. Mack’s vocals drip with a Nicki Minaj-esque sass before multifarious drums blend with shouting gang vocals as the choruses explode with intensity and abandon.
Emmy Mack talks about the meaning behind ‘Fake’: “This song is actually a bit of an in-joke. We wrote it as a vent session following a negative experience we had on tour. I actually never expected to release it – but we had so much fun playing it live & ended up being so stoked on how the recording turned out that it just felt right. It’s a hostile little smartass of a tune, inspired by that awkward moment when you realise someone you always looked up to and admired isn’t all that they seem”.
To coincide with the release, the band will play three shows with Australian progressive rock veterans Cog and three dates with metalcore legends The Amity Afliction in Januray, before making an appearance at Download Festival in both Sydney and Melbourne next year.
This continues on from a relentless year of touring, including performances at Download UK, BIGSOUND and Halloween Hysteria 2019, as well as supporting the likes of Sevendust, Hands Like Houses and Ocean Grove. The band recently completed their debut Australian headline tour, where they sold out shows in both Sydney and Melbourne.
Previous single ‘Only Bones’ garnered over 290K streams on Spotify and scored full rotation on triple j. The track also saw widespread support from online tastemakers Rock Sound (UK), Hysteria Mag, The Music, Heavy Mag, and Dead Press (UK). The official music video was added to rotation on ABC’s Rage.
The band were official ambassadors for Aus Music T-Shirt Day and Support Act earlier this month. Emmy also mentions about the importance of mental health to her and the band – “We lost a close friend and former bandmate to suicide last year so it’s something we’re particularly passionate about. Music has been a huge healing influence in our own mental health struggles as individuals, and our experiences around it underpin much of our song-writing and messaging”.
In the coming weeks RedHook will reveal an accompanying music video for ‘Fake’.
