The Tommyhawks made the most of a near full house to showcase their debut album ‘Underground Raptor’ at The Navy Club in Fremantle. Following on from recent appearances at Hotter than Hell & the Nannup Festival, fans old & new enjoyed a set littered with tracks from the new release, as well as crowd favourites taken from their previous three EPs.
It’s hard to describe their ‘sound’ as the band members are all very different, not just in look & style but, as I found out in my recent interview with vocalist & guitarist Addison Axe, also with their musical tastes. This is clearly evident with the set list on display tonight, as we are taken on a rollercoaster ride of chilled emotional vibes one minute to bouncy sing-a-longs the next. Opening with ‘Mr Magpie’ from their 2015 EP ‘We’re All Meat and We’re Gonna Get Eat’ it’s immediately evident that Axe is a wonderful natural front woman with her outstanding vocals & complete calmness as she connects with the crowd with ease. Holding it all together perfectly behind her kit, drummer Jess June worked to lay down the bands foundations with bass player Ness Thornton close behind. The powerful saxophone sounds from Thea Woodward made up this hugely talented collection of musicians but what sets these girls apart from others is the sheer energy & chemistry they give off during the set.
The album is a great listen in its own right but to hear the tracks transform onto the live stage is something else and we are treated to eight of the nine songs from ‘Underground Raptor’ tonight and considering some of these are being performed live for the first time, they are played extremely well. The band closed with ‘Fighting the Times’ as guest singers, who attended Nannup, joined the girls onstage for one big party closer. The Tommyhawks now head to the eastern states for a run of 13-shows before returning to play Perth’s Lucy’s Love Shack on 5th April. If they are coming to a venue near you I highly recommend you get along, enjoy a night in their company and support them at the merchandise table by buying their wonderful album.
